Search Tips
Searching in Databases
-
Use quotation marks to search for phrases (two or more words): "united states" or "developing world economies"
-
Use OR to combine synonyms or similar terms; increases the number of results: group OR organization OR association
-
Use AND to combine different concepts and narrow down your search; decreases the number of results: children AND sweatshops
-
Use truncation--usually an asterisk (*) or question mark (?)--to cut word down to its trunk in order to get all forms of the word: activis* = activism, activist, activists
-
Use parentheses to separate OR terms from AND terms; always put the ( ) around the OR clause: (activis* OR advoca*) AND (group* OR organization* OR association*) AND ("united states" OR america*)
