English 102 Annotated Bibliography Assignment

The library project for this course is an annotated bibliography of 5-8 sources, all of which related to a topic of your choice. The purpose of the assignment is to demonstrate an understanding of the research skills covered by the library instruction component of this class, and to help you find quality sources for your final research paper.  DUE FEBRUARY 29, 2008.

An annotated bibliography includes a brief introduction (roughly 2-3 paragraphs) explaining the scope of your topic and the focus of your research, a citation for each source as well as a short notation describing the source and its relevance to the research topic. Sources may include: books, scholarly articles, reputable magazine and newspaper articles, and reputable Web sites.  Feel free to use the bibliographies of articles assigned for class as jumping off points for locating other scholarly articles on your topic.  You must use the Dominican University library resources (periodical databases and online catalog to locate the majority of your sources.

Your annotated bibliography should:

  • Begin with a short introduction
  • List each source in alphabetical order by author
  • Use the MLA style bibliographic format
  • Include at least 4 scholarly journal articles and at least one book (recently published or classic in the field)
  • Include an explanatory paragraph briefly summarizing why the resource is or is not useful for your research paper.  Remember, you may include resources that you DID NOT find useful for your paper. We want to know that you can critically evaluate resources.
  • Include a brief explanation of the process through which you found the item--catalog or database search, worked cited of another article or book, etc. as well as the search terms used.
  • Include a photocopy of the title and verso pages (back of the title page) of each book cited, or the first page of each article included.

Please turn in 2 copies of your annotated bibliography on February 29, 2008.
